We all have the desire to be a Mark Zuckerberg some day. Most of us dream big, dreams that are very high and are usually difficult to reach. It is very easy to say things like, “I am gonna be the CEO of this company someday,” “I am gonna be one of the most sought-after doctor someday,” “I am gonna be the biggest entrepreneur in the Philippines someday.”
Someday. What will do you if that certain day has arrived, but still you don’t have the guns and the target to shoot?
Being very idealistic with dreams is great especially for us young people, but then idealism should also be supported by proper action. And that action I am referring to is always very hard to do or even know.
We would not be enjoying the perks of Facebook today if Mark Zuckerberg’s girl did not ditch him, and told him “You’re an asshole!” Together with his desire to become one of the cool guys in harvard, he was able to determine what he had to do. Then Facemash, now Facebook, became bigger and bigger until what it is today.
He knew what to do. Maybe at that time, he was not even considering being the youngest billionaire in the world. But then he became a billionaire. Maybe for him it was luck or instincts, maybe it was his geek computer abilities or maybe it was his passion to do what he loves to do. But still, how did he know that?
For people like us who are already aiming at a certain target, it is very hard to know our first step because we will never know if that step is actually the right step we should have taken. When everything has been said and done, it only boils to one short question.
How?
Actually.
It is also actually about one short answer only.
Take a step. Any step.
Martin Luther King, Jr. himself said, "Take the first step in faith. You don't have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step." For if you did not do anything, you would forever be trapped wherever you are, and people who are trapped never reach their destination. It is better to commit a wrong move, rather than making none, for every move you make reveals a certain part of your whole staircase. Only then will you gradually know how to travel your journey right.
Zuckerberg did not actually know if his first logarithm in making Facemash would go right. But he was not afraid. He had faith. Unless we give up, all of us fails toward success, and success alone.
Then maybe, we could actually be our own Zuckerbergs and make our own Facebook.
